Being curvy can create many obstacles for a bride looking for her dream dress, the biggest of which being the lack of samples in their sizing to try on.   Below are five key tips to make you informed before you get out to try wedding gowns, so your bridal experience is a great one.

Sometimes wedding gown shopping can be an overwhelming experience, but when your goal is to feel beautiful and you don't, it can also be very discouraging. This can be common with brides of any size, however, we see many curvy girls in our salon that have had a less than great experience elsewhere. Being curvy can create many obstacles for a bride looking for her dream dress, the biggest of which being the lack of samples in their sizing to try on.   Below are five key tips to make you informed before you get out to try wedding gowns, so your bridal experience is a great one.

1. Know Your Body Type

The greatest knowledge a bride can have is the shape of her body and being confident in her curves. This allows the bridal consultant to connect with you on a different level which many brides cherish. By being aware of your body type, it causes you to go into the consultation more open minded and with the knowledge of styles that would best suit your personal shape. With this being said, it doesn't limit you to one specific gown style, but it allows you to have previous knowledge of where different styles draw the eye when on the body.

2. Shop For Your Current Self

While knowing your body shape, shop for that shape, not one you hope to be when it comes time for the wedding. Many girls start workouts and various routines before their wedding with hopes of losing weight and toning. Although this is common, it isn't always a successful undergoing. We encourage you to work towards the best 'YOU', but order appropriately for the greatest satisfaction come your big day. Wedding gowns can typically be taken in about 2 dress sizes, so ordering for your current size is always recommended. If you choose to go down in size, you do risk the dress not fitting, and there isn't always room to let a gown out. Keep this in mind, and make a smart choice for your body.

3. Do Your Research

Although you may hear reviews about various bridal boutiques, make sure you do further research to find out what salons carry sample sizes that will fit comfortably. Some boutiques may post online the size range they carry, or have a curvy girl section, but many will not. Your best option is to call around and inquire about the availability in stores you are hoping to shop at.

Tip From the Shop: Ask about the size range the store has in curvy sizes and what kind of styles they have. At Taylor's, we have over 50 dresses in our curvy collection, ranging from 16-30. This is seen as one of the best selections for curvy dresses in the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

4. Structure Can Be a Lifesaver

While browsing online and shopping, keep in mind that materials that are more structured will give you a smoother look. For example, lace typically helps to even out any unwanted focal points. With this in mind, materials that are light, such as chiffon, tend to be more clingy and thus less forgiving. We suggest you stay away from materials like this in order to get your best look and feel the most comfortable come your special day. Another thing to consider in regards to structure is the availability of a lace-up gown. The greatest perk of a lace-up versus a zipper gown is the option to tighten the lace-up at any point. This allows for more room in case of a sizing fluctuation before your wedding, but after your last fitting.

5. Proper Undergarments

Along with structure, proper undergarments can also make a huge difference on how a dress looks, and how it sits on the body. Make sure you purchase undergarments that lay smooth on the body and aren't too fitted. Another recommendation is to look into a shaper such as Spanx. Spanx helps to smooth out any lines from undergarments as well as any curves you don't want seen. With this combination, you will have a more seamless look under your wedding gown.

Keeping in mind these 5 tips will greatly help you have a positive experience while shopping for your dream gown. We also would like to recommend that you keep an open mind and be willing to try things your associate suggests. She will have knowledge of the dresses and the way they fit, so she may pull dresses you never would've chosen for yourself. Some girls come in knowing exactly what style they want to wear, but end up finding their dream gown is something totally different, so don't rule out a style until you've tried out a few, just in case.
